The third period: Reading
Ability goals: Talk about the reasons why students admire Helen Thayer.
Learning ability goals : Enable students to conclude Helen Thayer’s qualities by reading the text.
Teaching methods: listening to the tape; group discussion
Teaching aids: A recorder, a projector and some slides
Teaching procedures
Step I Revision
Ask students what they learned last period and what qualities make the women great.
Ask them to discuss in pair and then collect the words to describe the

Introduction: tell students that they are going to read a passage about another great woman.
Step II Pre – reading
Ask students to look at the title on Page 31 “Alone In Antarctica” and then learn something
about Antarctica by showing them a map and pictures.
Ask students to work in pairs to answer the four questions.
Do you know the names of three countries that are part of the North Pole? What about the South Pole?
Which animals live on the North Pole? And which on the South Pole?
Why do polar bears never eat penguins?
3. Let students imagine if they are traveling alone to the South Pole, what they will take with them.
Step III Reading
Look through the text in two minutes and try to find the main ideas.
