e Orwell is the pseudonym or pen name of Eric Arthur Blair (1903-50), British novelist and essayist, born at Motihari, Bengal, India. His father, Richard Wellesley Blair, was a minor customs official in the opium department of the Indian Civil Service. When Orwell was 4 years old, his family returned to England and settled at Henley, a village near London. When Orwell was 8 years old, he was sent to a private preparatory school in Sussex. He later claimed that his experiences there determined his views on the English class system.
