I am going to talk about the courtyard buildings. As far as I know, most Beijing people used to live in courtyard buildings called Siheyuan. But now living in a building called Siheyuan is kind of a status symbol in Beijing because it’s spacious and super comfortable.
A small or medium-sized Siheyuan usually has its main gate built at the southeastern corner of the courtyard with a screen wall just inside. A single implementation of Siheyuan comprises of garden surrounded by four houses and protected by high walls. Such an arrangement offers more privacy and is also good for protection against dust storms which are not rare in Beijing. With all the plants and flowers, the court is just like a garden of the family.
