POEMS AND PROSE
Christina ina Rossetti was born in London on
5 December 1830. Her father, the Italian patriot and poet Gabriele
Rossetti, occupied himself with talking revolutionary politics and
with writing speculative studies of Dante; her well-read mother,
Frances Mary Lavinia Polidori, encouraged her early efforts at writ-
ing verse; her elder brother, the poet and painter Dante Gabriel
Rossetti, helped her select and revise poems for publication. From
the late 1840s, through the 1850s, she wrote the poems that, in 1862,
made up her first major volume, Goblin Market and Other Poems; a
further volume, The Prince’s Progress and Other Poems, followed in
1866. Her writing then took new directions: a book of sophisticated
nursery rhymes, Sing-Song (published 1871); and the beginning of a
commitment to writing, as a devout Anglican, a series of devotional
books for the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, which
would include her ‘reading diary’ Time Flies (1885) and -
mentary on the Apocalypse, The Face of the Deep (1892). A third
major volume of poems, A Pageant and Other Poems, appeared in
1881, and confirmed her standing as one of the great poets of the age.
She never married, declining two serious proposals — one from a
Roman Catholic painter, the other from a sceptic scholar — for reli-
gious reasons; and illnesses reinforced her reclusive tendencies. In
1892 she developed breast cancer, and she died on 29 December
1894. In 1896, her supportive brother, William Michael Rossetti,
published the poems that she had chosen to leave in manuscript.
Simon Humphries was formerly a Fellow and Tutor in English
at Trinity College, Oxford. He is now an independent scholar.
