Oliver Twist
is Charles Dickens’s second novel and also is the first novel in the English language to centre throughout on a child protagonist ([prəu'tæɡənist] n. 主角,主人公) and is also notable for Dickens's unromantic portrayal of criminals and their sordid (['sɔ:did] adj. 肮脏的;卑鄙的;利欲熏心的) lives.
In England in the 1830s, the poor truly had no voice, political or economic. In Oliver Twist, Dickens presents the everyday existence of the lowest members of England society. He goes far beyond the experiences of the workhouse, extending his depiction(描述) of poverty of London’s squalid(肮脏的) streets, dark alehouses(酒馆),and thieves’s dens(窝点). He gives voice to those who had no voice, establishing a link between politics and literature with his mentary(评论).
Oliver Twist was an orphan lived in workhouse(贫民****艺所). Life there was so hard that Oliver escaped to London. However, he was controlled by Fagin to steal things. Olive was soon saved incidentally. Then he lived a happy life just for a short time because he was caught to Fagin again. But at last, he lived a permanent happy life!
