I. About linguistics
Linguistics: scientific study and study of languages in general
General linguistics: study of language as a whole
Distinctions in linguistics
(usually against traditional grammar)
1. descriptive vs. prescriptive
Modern linguists believe that whatever occurs in the language people use should be described and analyzed in their investigation.
2. Synchronic vs. diachronic
Synchronic: the description of a language at some point of time in history
Diachronic: the description of a language as it changes through time
In modern linguistics, a synchronic approach seems to enjoy priority over a diachronic one.
现代语言学研究以口头语为首要对象
语言是先有口头语言,后形成文字系统的,目前世界上的几千种语言中,仍有一大部分无书面文字。现代语言学的目的在于研究建立在所有人类语言基础之上的总的原则。需回答这些问题:“什么是语言?”,“语言是怎样工作的?”“人类语言有何普遍性?”“语言在何种范围内变化?”以及“小孩如何****得语言的?”等等,所有这一切都决定了口语是首要的研究对象。
美国结构主义的开篇作《美洲印第安语手册》(Handbook of American Indian Languages)所描写的印第安语就是一种既缺少文字,更无历史文献的口头语言。转换生成语法力图证明这样一种假说:代表了人类语言本质方面的普遍语法(Universal grammar)是一个天生就有的,就像一个人天生就有走路的能力,他们研究的主要对象就是儿童的口语。语言学中的语用学所研究的语言行为理论(Speech act)也是以人的对话为主,讨论三种不同的语言行为,分析会话的四个原则。
总之,对现代语言学的研究来说,口语资源丰富,语言心理,思维方式,社会风****文化变迁等在口语中都有充分的反映。口语可以开阔视野,开发新的领域。
