第一节大写与翻译
在翻译中,英译汉一般不涉及大小写问题,而汉
译英则需关注英语的大写规则。翻译中常用的英文大写规则可归纳如下:
1、人名及与之连用的称呼、职称、头衔、诨名大写。
Daniel Defoe, Uncle Tom, Senator Harry.
2. 星系、恒星、行星、卫星、星座等天体名称要大写。
The Milky Way, North Star, Saturn; 但sun, earth, moon 通常小写,除非是作为太阳系特定天体名称出现,或同其他大写天体名称连用,如 the Moon and Mars。The solar system 也小写。
3. 海洋、海峡、港湾、岛屿、半岛、湖泊、河流、山脉、高原、平原、沙漠等自然界事物的通名作为专名的一部分时大写。
Pacific Ocean, Hudson River, Rocky Mountains.
通名不作为专名一部分时不大写, 如 the Caribbean islands, the river Thames, the river Nile
4. 东、西、南、北、中等方位名词作为专名的一部分时大写。
East Asia, South Carolina, the Middle East; 仅指方向时小写,如 south by east (南偏东),west of London
5. 省、州、市、县、乡、区等行政区划单位名称作为
专名的一部分时大写,作为普通名词时小写。Hainan Province, New York City/the city of New York, his congressional district.
6. 街道、公园、广场、建筑物、名胜古迹等专名大写,如Wall Street, Fifth Avenue, Times Square, Tian An Men Square, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Golden Gate Bridge.
,其中的虚词小写. Peking University, World anization, House of Representatives.
8. 国家、民族、语言名称大写,如 China, French, English
9. 某国人、某地人的名称大写。如 Chinese, Asians, Londoners, New Yorkers. 国名、地名、民族名、语言名称派生的形容词或作形容词用时亦大写,如 English.
10. 地质年代、历史时期、历史事件大写。如 Bronze Age, Middle Ages, Roaring Twenties, the Renaissance; 大写的Ice Age为新生代第四纪的“冰川时代”,小写的ice age为“冰期”;历史时期用于泛指时全小写,如 classical period, golden age, atomic age.
11. 星期、月份、节日的首字母大写。如Thursday, October, National Day。四季名称小写,带四季名称的节气也小写,如 spring equinox, winter solstice. 中国二十四节气的名称英译时一律大写,如the Beginning of Spring(立春), the End of Heat(处暑), the Winter Solstice(冬至) 。
12. 宗教专名大写,如God, Allah, Puritans, Zen
13. 军队专名大写,如 US Marine Corp (美国海军陆战队),the Eighth Route Army。泛指某种部队时小写,如naval air force (海军航空兵)
14. 奖金、奖章、勋章等专名的首字母大写,如 Nobel Prize, National Book Award, Medal of Honour.
15. 注册商标、服务标志的首字母大写。 Coca-Cola, Air Express.
16. 来源于专名的主义、思想、学说、学派大写,如Hellenism, Mao Zedong Thought, Neoplatonism. 不是来源于专名的主义、思想、学说、学派小写,如existentialism, postmodernism, big bang theory, the theory of relativity, physiocrat (重农主义者)。
17、宪法、法律、条约、政府文件各实词大写。 Atomic Energy Act
